Let's pretend that you have 35,000 to play with and you are looking for a Porsche for the weekend. Which do you buy? For the purpose of this argument, lets not consider Non-Porsche Options. Full Disclosure, this has a distinct possibility of occurring in the coming few months. Daily: 2014 BMW 328i M-Sport

Options:

- ANY 996 Carrera

- 996 Carrera 4S (clean)

- 996 Turbo (Rough)

- 997.1 Carrera (Rough)

- Boxster/Boxster S up to 2010

- Cayman up to 2011

WHY?

'09-'11 Boxster S with the factory LSD, because I like wind in my face and rwd cars with LSD.

(Porsche makes LSDs surprisingly uncommon and the Boxster & Cayman didn't get a factory LSD option until '09.)

Otherwise it'd be an '88-'89 944 Turbo S and a slush fund for repairs and mods.

You could get the nicest 944 turbo in history.

Literally ignore any 911 in that list before 2009.

And then get an 09+ Boxster or Cayman

Of those I'd buy a Cayman actually. My dream Porsche is a 993 GT2 or a 993 Turbo, but I guess that's "slightly" outside the price range ;)

As for why a Cayman and not let's say a 996 or a 997? Well, I HATE how the 996 looks, and a quite nice Cayman will always be better than a rough 997.

I would vote 996 Carrera C4S, under the stipulation that the IMS issue has been addressed and the car has been taken care of. You get the Turbo body, AWD, a sweet NA flat-6, and you'll save some money on insurance over a legit Turbo. If you can't find a C4S in your price range that meets your requirements (IMS!!!) I would bite the bullet and go with a rough Turbo and bring it back to 100%.

When I looked for my M3 I wasn't really concerned with it having perfect paint or a spotless interior, what the car did need to have was records and receipts for the services performed on it. What I got out of my search was a mechanically sound M3 with all the records, yeah the interior is a little worn but its a 13 year old car, the front end also had some rock chips but I could deal with those imperfections. (I just got the front end resprayed out of a very small accident, so thats taken care of!)

$35K...

Weekend car, not daily driver or road-trip car...

Boxster S, as new as possible. Cayman S for the chassis rigidity if you plan on track days, rather than just road enjoyment.

It is nice to put the top down on the weekend car, though, and the lighter, mid-engined platform is a purer handling car for more fun, where practicality isn't as much a factor.

If you were talking about a daily driver, or a road trip car... I would have gone with the nicest 911 variant you can find for that money, such as the 996 Carrera 4S.

May I ask how you flipped a boxster? That car has one of the lowest COG's..I can only imagine you hit an embankment or went off a cliff.

Rough 996 Turbo. Why? No IMS issues and TURBO. You can whine about the headlights, but there are pretty good looking aftermarket replacements these days.

I'd at least immediately scratch the Carrera 4S. Who wants a 4WD car as a fun weekend car? RWD should be a prerequisite.

I would buy a Corvette.

If I had to buy a Porsche I'd probably go for the Cayman

hydroplaned into the freeway wall at 75mph across 4 lanes (did a full 180*)

My wife went out and bought a new one a week later and everybody said she was crazy. The car had a crunched quarter panel of course, and the top was shredded to shit (I skidded about 10 ft based off the gouges in the road,) but I walked away with a few scratches from broken glass. The state trooper who took my info down said "you're lucky that wasn't a chevy or you would have lost your fucking head"
